Himanta Biswa Sarma has been actively into politics since his school days, and was closely associated with the leaders of the Assam Agitation. He passed his High School Leaving Certificate examination from Kamrup Academy School, Guwahati in 1985 and joined Cotton College, Guwahati for further studies. He was General Secretary (GS) of Cotton College Union Society (CCUS) from 1991 to 1992. He did his graduation in 1990 and post graduation in 1992 in political science from Cotton College, Guwahati. Sarma did LLB From Govt. Law College, Guwahati and obtained Ph.D degree from Gauhati University. He practiced law at Gauhati High Court from 1996 to 2001. Sarma has served three terms as MLA in Assam from the Congress party. He was elected from Jalukbari in 2001 and was re-elected in 2006 and 2011. He became a State Minister of Planning and Development in the year 2002. In 2006 he was the Minister for Health and Guwahati Development Department in cabinet rank. In 2011, in his third term, he became the health and education minister. After a long-drawn conflict with chief minister Tarun Gogoi, he resigned from all portfolios on 21st July 2014. On August 23, 2015 he resigned from the congress, and made it clear that he will be joining the BJP. Presently he is the MLA of Jalukbari constituency.
